Cliché Detector Rule

This rule checks for the presence of common clichés and overused phrases in writing. It helps writers maintain fresh, original prose by identifying tired expressions that might weaken their writing's impact.

Clichés are phrases that have been used so frequently they've lost their impact and originality. While these expressions might seem like convenient shortcuts to convey meaning, they often make writing feel stale and unimaginative. Professional writing benefits from unique, thoughtful expression rather than relying on worn-out phrases.

Examples:

The rule flags common clichés such as:

  • "needle in a haystack"
  • "think outside the box"
  • "at the end of the day"
  • "bite the bullet"
  • "easier said than done"

When these phrases are detected, the rule will generate a warning suggesting to avoid using the cliché and encouraging the writer to find a more original way to express the idea.

Instead of writing:

Finding the bug in the code was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Consider writing:

Finding the bug in the code required meticulous examination of thousands of lines.

This rule contains an extensive list of hundreds of common clichés and idioms, making it a comprehensive tool for identifying and eliminating overused expressions from your writing.
